Hiring During the Holidays
The holiday season is here and the end of the year is getting closer every day. To many of us, the holidays are the perfect time of the year to relax and unwind. For those who work in an office, Q4 means closing statements, bringing the year to a wrap, and submitting yearly terms.
However, most people don’t realize that the holiday season is one of the busiest and most profitable times of the year. As many of us go on vacation, we have a lot of free time to kill and spend money on; add holiday shopping on top of that and you have a surplus of demand for the retail, hospitality, entertainment, and leisure sectors. Not to mention that all the expenses related to this season may cause many workers find themselves in need of an extra income, hence, turning to seasonal jobs.
The Most Dreadful Time of the Year?
To many hiring managers, the end of the year sounds like the worst possible time to hire new employees. Sure, the aforementioned fields may dominate the hiring market in Q4 with their seasonal and temporary jobs. However, other industries also tend to hire seasonal workers in the last months of the year, and a great part of them even get to transition into a full-time, permanent position after the holidays. In fact, many candidates start applying during December so they can get a head start over other candidates that might start their job search in the new year.
The Advantages of Hiring During the Holidays
In two words: less competition. The main reason for you to continue hiring new employees during this season, even if you’re not in the retail sector, is that very few people outside this industry are actually doing it.
We have created this false conception that the job market comes to a stop during the months of December and January; that no one in their right mind would even think of looking for a job during this season. This is completely false.
There are many prospective candidates out there looking for a job during these months. Between December 2016 and January 2017 neuvoo received over 15 million visits from people looking for jobs. Since they’re probably free they will most likely spend more time online, so it’s your job to try to reach out to them. Remember that most companies have depleted their yearly hiring budget, or are simply not actively looking to hire new employees. Why don’t you step in and sweep those good prospects when no one else is competing for them?
But Most Seasonal Jobs Are Only Temporary, Right?
Not necessarily. While it is true that during Q4 the job market is dominated mostly by the retail sector and that most of the jobs they offer are temporary, you don’t have to follow that trend. Many of the candidates that are looking for an opportunity during this season do so hoping that they will find a full-time job by January.
It’s a Win-Win Situation
Hiring during this season can be quite beneficial for both companies and candidates. The main perk of it is that they both get to skip the messy competition during the first months of the next year.
Recruiting is anything but seasonal. People need jobs all year round and it is important that they are provided with the opportunity to apply for yours. There is a big, untapped market just waiting to be blown wide open, so don’t miss out on the possibilities and the good candidates you could find during this time of the year.
